2021 Reading List

This year I had a goal of reading 60 books in Goodreads, and I met that goal. But actually, I read many more. I read most of my books in iBooks these days, and it reports that I read 84 books. This compared to 33 books in 2020, which was the worst reading year of my life.

My favorite books this year were Deanna Raybourn’s historical murder mysteries starring the intrepid Veronica Speedwell. I read a lot of historical murders by Deanna Raybourn this year and enjoyed all of it.

I enjoyed reading Kristen Britain’s Winterlight from the Green Rider series, I like the main character a lot and always look forward to reading about her. Same with Leigh Bardugo’s characters in Rule of Wolves.

Honorable mention to The Empress of Salt and Fortune and When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain by Nghi Vo for having great characters and a lot of wit and style without a lot of fuss.

84 – 60 = 14

This difference is probably romance novels. I don’t generally record them in Goodreads, not because of something ridiculous like I don’t think they’re “real literature” but because iBooks tracks them so I don’t read them again and again. I track my other fantasy/fiction (and miscellaneous) reading in GoodReads because they’re often serial novels and it’s hard to find the next one or keep track of what’s coming out in iBooks. But anyway, I remember binging romance novels at one point and that’s those 14.

Miscellaneous Fiction & Fantasy

I read mostly fantasy and sci-if books by women authors. Occasionally other stuff. Here’s the one-offs that I read.

Among the Beasts and Briars – Ashley Poston
The Eyes of the Dragon – Stephen King
The Tainted Relic – The Medieval Murderers (hated this)
The Starless Sea – Erin Morgenstern (only ok, slow)
Banewreaker – Jacqueline Carey (loved the Kushiel series, hated this)
All the Light We Cannot See – Anthony Doerr (pretty good, WWII)
The Invention of Wings – Sue Monk Kidd (also good/heavy, I read this one about slavery and abolition after Doerr apparently so I could slightly depress myself)

Continuing from other years

These are books that are parts of series that I read more of this year.

A Sky Beyond the Storm – Saba Tahir (love these!)
Rule of Wolves – Leigh Bardugo, who I just love!
Unquiet Land – Sharon Shinn (have read most of her books)
The Dream Gatherer – Kristen Britain (Love this series so much)
Winterlight – Kristen Britain (want her to write faster!)
The Dark Heart of Florence – Tasha Alexander (#15 in this historical mystery series!)
The Quartered Sea – Tanya Huff (another favorite author)
Blood Debt – Tanya Huff
Ambush or Adore – Gail Carriger (yet another fave author)
Girls of Fate and Fury – Natasha Ngan (love these)
Beyond – Mercedes Lackey/Valdemar
